So Done With Hello Fresh

Some of my previous posts praised hello fresh and other meal box companies.  However, I was very disappointed in my last interaction with them.

I had the hello fresh app on my phone, and I (I guess stupidly) trusted the application every week to notify me to choose my meals, so I would have the chance to either choose my meals for the week or skip that week.

The app must have logged itself out, because on Sunday, my husband checked our credit card statement and he saw a 69.00 charge from Hello Fresh.  He knew I would have told him if I had ordered from them, because I hadn’t been – I had been doing menu planning myself each week, and that had been going really well.

I first tried to log in to see the meals – and that is when I noticed that I had been logged out and they were meals that I would absolutely not have chosen. Customer service was closed, so I immediately emailed them.  The next morning I called, and I was not treated very respectfully.  I explained what happened, how I had ordered multiple times and even sent them two referrals, and I was just asking them to please cancel my order BECAUSE I HAD NOT ORDERED IT OR AUTHORIZED IT . They said no and offered either half refund or a new box.  I just opted for the new box BECAUSE THEY REFUSED TO GET ME THE REFUND OF WHAT I DIDN’T ORDER.  Once I got the new box, I canceled Hello Fresh.  I think they have a good product but I just did not like the way that I was treated on the phone.  They were very unkind and rude to me.  I thought that what they should have done, if they wanted to keep a customer, was to refund me the whole box that I did not order. I will never be using them again.

I imagine that they get a lot of revenue from people who make the same mistake as me. 😦

Marley Spoon Experience

I loved it. The meals were delicious, easy to cook, and just a little bit “different” and no like what I would usually cook. The package came in time and there were no issues with the packaging. All the food was very fresh.

I only have pictures of two of the meals.
This is keema curry with naan. I had never made curry before and it was great! The portion was great, and the different spices really punched up the taste of the meat. My husband and I both loved it.  The naan was very fresh and tasty as well. I am a sucker for good naan. It was real good.
This meal was called Greek poutine. It was thinly sliced potatoes with deconstructed pork sausage (pork with lot of spices and red wine vinegar and orange juice) topped with feta sauce and arugula. It was so good! I had never mad anything like it.

The third me mealcwas glazed chicken with roasted Brussels sprouts and onion. The glaze was something I had never done before and it was really delicious. It mixed maple syrup with orange zest and a few other ingredients and the glaze cooked down in the pot. Yum. The glaze really elevated whatnwpuld have been just okay pan cooked chicken. Brussels sprouts and onions were of course food but I always make them.

All in all I recommend trying them. 💋

Califlower Rice and Buffalo Chicken Nuggets

Last night I decided to try to make a whole dinner out of recipes that I have never tried before. I had bought riced califlower at Trader Joe’s because I had heard all about it from health and cooking magazines and blogs that I read online.  For the califlower rice I first chopped up an onion and sautéed it in some olive oil. I then added in the califlower and some more olive oil and sautéed that. I topped it off with some lemon juice.

For the buffalo chicken nuggets I followed a skinny taste recipe. You can find the recipe here –http://www.skinnytaste.com/baked-buffalo-chicken-nuggets/ I followed the recipe and it came out really great. Here is a picture of the finished product:The chicken nuggets came out so so good. I even had some left over to take to lunch today. They were just a little bit spicy. I made a dipping sauce by mixing together mustard, honey, mayo and lemon juice. Yummmmy.  I served everything with a side of steamed broccoli.

I was not a big fan of the califlower rice. I am willing to try it again, but it just was not satisfying like rice or pasta would be. I saw a recipe for califlower fried rice and I might try that out.

Tonight I am making shrimp. I will share my experience either later or tomorrow! ❤️💕. Anyone have an fabulous links for shrimp recipes?

Halloween Dessert Party

This afternoon we hosted a Halloween party at our house. It was so much fun. Here are some of the decorations:

We bought so much candy for the event, and for Halloween as well. So many kids come to our neighborhood so we have to be ready for them! I don’t have a picture of the baby in costume, but she was a pumpkin. I didn’t want to put her in costume until the last minute, so she wouldn’t get dirty.

We supplied the candy. My mom brought brownies and Apple cake. I frosted the brownies and put sprinkles on them. My sister in law brought pizza crumb, which is a crumb cake made only of the crumbs and in the shape of a pizza! My mother in law brought cookies and fruit, and my mom’s friend brought bobka.

Yummmmmmmm. So full of sweets . We also ordered pizza and someone brought a Crave case from White Castle.

I made mulled cider. I used the four spices lined up below. I bought a gallon of apple from target, heated it up and threw in these four spices until the cider was bubbling. I then let the cider simmer. I had mine this way but some guests decided to spike it.

The party was a lot of fun and the baby loved all the attention.

Trying Hello Fresh

So I took the plunge and ordered hello fresh. So far I have used it for two weeks. Thought I thought the experience was great, I have canceled the subscription.

The first week I got a thirty dollar coupon to try the service. That is about fifty percent off. The second week, a friend of mine joined and used my code and I got a credit because some of the meat I was given was leaking in transit. Otherwise, the service is too expensive for me to continue using.

The experience itself was great. All of the recipes were delicious and gave me some ideas to inspire my own home cooking. It was great to come home and have all the ingredients prepared and ready for me to make a chosen recipe for my husband and I. Here is a picture of the Thai spiced meatballs I made this week. They were delicious. So, I would recommend trying them. It’s up to if you want to continue using the service. If you want to try , here is a link for Hello Fresh. The link is to a coupon. It is definitely worth it for that first week, and you just might find that the convenience is worth the price. The quality of the meat and the vegetables has been great and the recipes were interesting but not too weird for us to eat.  Though it wasn’t for us.

I have ordered Marley Spoon for us to try the week of November 7th.

So, We Found Our Home

backyardWe found our gorgeous home! Above is a panorama picture of our deck and backyard.

A colonial in Gibson.

Valley Stream in Nassau County, Long Island is where we chose to buy our home. We love it here. We have a gorgeous backyard (not too big but just perfect). The house was listed as four bedrooms, but is actually three.  The fourth bedroom is the attic, which is an awesome living space, but definitely not where I want any of our children living – that is, at least until they are teenagers.

The next thing on our agenda for real estate is a possible summer home. We are thinking of buying a house on the North Fork of Long Island.  We got engaged on Orient Point and really enjoy the wineries, the small cute towns, and the beautiful beaches. The houses are expensive, but there are many more deals to be found there than there are in the Hamptons, for sure. The North Fork house hunting is definitely a long term project. We are not ready to look for real, as we just had a new baby! She is six months now so not BRAND new, but still new. We are absolutely in love 🙂 and takes away most of our free time. It is a wonder that I was able to write this post, but she went to be really early tonight.

Looking for a Home

Dan and I have recently started looking to buy a house and we are very conflicted about it.

On one hand, we really love where we live.  We live in a two bedroom apartment in Astoria, across the street from Dan’s grandparents, and have a very sweet deal.

We know that we want to live in either Queens or Long island and have started to focus in on certain towns.

I however don’t know if I am ready to leave Astoria.

I am conflicted about moving to a house that we will have to pay a lot more per month for our mortgage.  I am conflicted about moving farther away from the city.  I am conflicted about whether we will be moving into the right town!

How will we know what house we want to buy? How do we know what the right neighborhood is? It is really very tough.

Port Washington is my favorite.  It is a gorgeous town.  Today we looked at a house, which was very nice.  The main issue was that it only had one bathroom! Granted, the bathroom was very large, but I think that a family need more than one toilet!!! I can think of many instances where Dan and I had to go to the bathroom at the same time.  What happens when you add one or two kids into the mix?

Dan is more into north flushing, in Queens, because he is obsessed with the like 22 minute commute to get into the city.  The houses are beautiful, but there is definitely much less of a town than Port Washington.

What do you recommend?
